Work Experience at Justelle
My name is Charlotte and I have been doing work experience at Justelle Marketing and Media for the last two weeks. I am a journalism student at the University of Portsmouth and I have been gaining valuable skills in a real workplace. Despite being in the final year of my course, I am still struggling to figure out what I want to do exactly when I graduate. Marketing, PR, and creative writing are my current interests so I loved having the opportunity to work and learn more. Being here has given me an insight into how my skills can be integrated into real-life situations.
I also joined a networking event for local businesses run by the Yeovil Chamber. From a journalist’s point of view, seeing local businesses come together and support each other is an important thing for people to know about and it has taught me how networking can help my career progression in the future.
I was taught how to write in different styles to target different audiences and use social media scheduling software.
Justelle Marketing works with other companies that have joint clients and supports people with their business growth and strategies. Through meeting people in other companies this week such as the local radio station and website development, I was given opportunities to work with them and see how they use marketing/journalism in their work.
The radio has been a big interest to me- I am excited to learn how to use the equipment at Radio Ninesprings and see how audio journalism and advertising are broadcasted.
This placement has taught me to be confident with my writing and it has inspired me to think about my own career in this industry. The information that was given to me has been very helpful when sitting in meetings and I was taught the importance of segmenting clients’ target audiences to write the correct message for each group.
The biggest piece of advice that I will take away from this experience is that the messages put across on behalf of a client represents them and it truly affects how their business grows. Language and how the company is portrayed to the public is the most powerful aspect, so the target audience is a crucial thing to focus on.
